Derek Thomas is the Vice President of Business Development at Veritas Farms. We caught up with him to hear more about his journey into cannabis.

How did you get involved in cannabis?

The first decade of my career was in hospitality and while I found a lot of success, it was not a fulfilling career for me. I have always been passionate about alternative plant-based health and sustainability. Around this same time, I became aware of the incredible benefits of hemp - not just full-spectrum hemp oil, but the overall value and benefits of the crop. So I quit my career and moved to California to start a hemp-based sustainable clothing line. While I moved on from it years ago, I stayed in the cannabis space and eventually joined the Veritas Farms team!

What is your mission with @veritasfarmsofficial?

Veritas Farm's main mission is to provide the highest quality, efficacious and transparent full-spectrum hemp oil health and wellness products. Almost equally as important is our educational work in order to ensure consumers understand what quality full-spectrum CBD products are and how to identify them.

Where do you see yourself in the industry in 5 years?

Deep in a new product development brainstorming session exploring the combinations of different cannabinoid and terpene profiles' effects on specific conditions.

What's the biggest challenge of working in the cannabis space and the biggest reward?

The biggest challenge currently is a lack of federal regulation. The lack of clear regulations and guidelines causes retailer uncertainty and apprehensiveness, banking restrictions, a ban on certain marketing opportunities and most importantly; it allows opportunistic companies to take advantage of consumer confusion.

Do you have any advice for any fellow cannapreneurs?

There's never been a better time to enter the cannabis space. Be creative, unique, genuine and most importantly; build a team that you trust and empower them to be successful.
