So it's best to have a separate tent 10 x 10 or so or in a room with fans but how do you keep the odor from dispersing through your house that's my big concern

I was actually just recently trying out drying in my active tent and to be honest it seems to not have worked out that well for me. The plants got very brown even with active ventilation. Not sure why but that was my result.
